(Focus on the Global South)推介了一部最新的纪录短片。

COLOR MY IRIS

Formed early 2002, with initial line-up consisting of Thong Wing Hoong (Thong), Ang Chek Chow (Ang), Yau Way King (King), Ahmad Nazery (Jiboy) and Rohazuddin Hassan (E.D). From band members being the key persons in both of the hot and controversial JBHC bands, Kharisma and Kamasutra, we evolved to a band playing mostly soft melancholic songs that reflect a more relaxing side of indie music. Our music was influenced and inspired by a a huge range of bands, such as The Gloria Record, Mineral, Sunny Day Real Estate, Buddhistson, Elliott, and Cursive.

Initially we started out playing at small gigs and shows around JB, KL and Singapore (year 2002). The exposure to the overwhelming scene encouraged us to record our first E.P. entitled 'Ending Harmony' in December 2002. The debut E.P. was well received, inflicting positive reviews from both local and foreign magazines. Thanks to the DIY network's efforts, our music bridged continents, reaching not only states around Malaysia, but also around Asia (i.e. Singapore and Japan) and countries in Europe (i.e. Germany and UK).

The opportunity to play at gigs, shows and music festivals gave us the confidence and continuous passion to grow along with our music. Our most memorable experiences include the 2003 Baybeats Music Festival (Esplanade, Singapore) where we had the privelege to perform alongside great bands from all over the globe like The Gloria Records (USA), Buddhistson (Japan), and Fonzie (Portugal).

2004 went by quietly for our band due to major changes in our lives, (i.e. leaving university lives and settling down with new jobs in different states). Due to heavy workloads, regretfully our drummer, Ang had to pull out and thus, the new line-up now consist of a new drummer, youngest in the band, Mohammad Saiful (Epul), with very provocative skills and a taste for unaccustomed beats.

This time around, we're back full force, with a new line-up, more progressive, more aggresive yet still the same melancholy 'us', with an active comeback to the local indie scene and plans for a full length CD release towards the end of the year.

Karim Fahimi

Urging Free and Fair Campus Reelection & Drop Charges and Stop Violations on Student Rights

Chronological events:

September 12, 2005 - Students under the name 'Malaysia Students Solidarity' visited to National Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) to raise the issue of Public Speaking Test in IIUM and cases of students being threatened on few campuses to vote for the pro-establishment students block.

September 21, 2005 - About 200 university students, held a 90-minute peaceful protest outside the Parliament building demanding for fair play during the upcoming campus elections. The students held placards with caricatures of the Higher Education Minister Dr Shafie Salleh, that were peppered with the words such as, 'blur' and 'I don't know', in reference to the minister's recent comments on the campus elections. They also unfurled a banner that read 'Students demand for clean campus election, free campus', while sporadic chants of 'student power' was heard a few times.

September 26, 2005 - Nomination day for the annual campus polls turned out to be 'boycott day' at five public universities, where the pro-students faction (always labeled as 'anti-establishment' faction) refused to put up candidates to show protest against the unfairness and abuse of power that caused by the university administration. Five universities are Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM), Universiti Telnologi Malaysia (UTM) and Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI).

October 7, 2005 - Complete with a black coffin which was draped with the Malaysian flag and had the words 'Campus Democracy', some 150 undergraduates staged a funeral procession in the pouring rain. The crowd marched from the National Mosque to the National Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) office in Kuala Lumpur to protest the end of democracy in varsities nationwide. In stead of sending reports to complain against those irregularities that happened during the campus election, the students were fighting on the street this time to demonstrate their deep disappointments on the violations.

October 18, 2005 - Science University of Malaysia (USM) student Ong Siew Shan receive a letter from USM Student Affairs and Development Division that ask her to attend a proceeding on Oct 24 regarding of distributing leaflet with title \"Agenda Mahasiswa\" (Student Agenda) and therefore breach University and University College Act.

October 20, 2005 - Lim Sok Swan attended her proceeding and request for postpone of proceeding due to late inform. And this was agreed by the authority after readout her charge and fact. However the postponed date is 24 October, which is 3 days public holiday after 20th Oct, this doesn't make any change to her because there is still insufficient time to make preparation included to get legal consultation.

October 24, 2005 – Lim Sok Swan attended her proceeding with the request to allow the attendance of her parents' representative, to allow her friend to accompany her to record the conversation during proceeding and to allow her to postpone the proceeding date. All the request had been rejected without proper reason, however the request of postpone were agreed and fixed to 10 November. Meanwhile, USM girl also attended her proceeding on this day and the request to postpone also agreed but without a specific date mentioned and will be announce soon on a written official approval.

October 26, 2005- Ooi Tze Min, second year student of Putra University of Malaysia, was charged with 7 cases:

7. Joining an assembly at Majistret court Kuala Lumpur on 22 April 2005 for giving support to abolish University and College University Act and Internal Security Act.

It was warning notice from our young people to announce the imperative crisis that happened in our countries, campuses all around Malaysia was full of faulty and unfairness.

Urging Free and Fair Campuses Election

BACKGROUND

Campus election which is the necessary process to form Student Representative Council (SRC) held every year in Malaysia local universities. However, complaints of faulty, unfairness and abuse of power heard from every university.

Looking at the history of campus elections, irregularities like midnight raids on students' rooms, crackdowns on activities organized by students who refuse to be stooges, physical assault of students who will not bow to orders and intimidation in other forms are alleged almost every year.

Memorandum after memorandum has been sent to the Suhakam and other relevant authorities, detailing such irregularities. Letters have been sent and dialogues held, and yet the issue be examined seriously enough. The result was still the same. The corruption of campus election was still uncertified, and the situation was gone even worst.

To date, none of the perpetrators have been brought to justice. The election commission headed by the deputy vice-chancellor in several universities has failed to ensure a free and fair election but acting unjust to ensure that preferred candidates win.

Then, what happened this year? Below are some case facts:

  1. Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIAM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) are using E-Voting which have no transparency, credibility and privacy.
  2. 6 USM campus election candidates and nominators' family receive phone call and message (SMS) of threat.
  3. At UTM, nomination form was increase from RM5 at year 2003 to RM50 and deposit was increase from RM10 to RM150 for campus level constituency and RM100 for faculty level constituency, protest form are sold with RM300. This is a clear financial pressure for student.

Drop Charge and Stop Violation on Students' Right

While struggling students' demand for free and fair campus election, students group were strike back by the authority of university with the charge over 3 university student under University and University College Act (UUCA).

Although from different university and charged with different act, but there is a similarity between two of them, which is they are charged because involve in the campaign of free and fair campus election. With the holiness intention to create a better campus environment, they become victim of UUCA and the tactic to terrify students.

They are:

i) Lim Sok Swan, second year student of Putra University of Malaysia, was charged under *Section 3(f)* and *Section 11, Sections Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (Discipline Students), 1975, University and University College Act, 1971* which state:

Section 3 \"a student cannot:
(f) organize, instigate or participant in boycott an exam, lecture class, tutorial, class or any other activities which is valid under university order or approver\"

and

Section 11 \"no student and no any organization, body or student group, can organize, carry on or participant in any activities outside the campus, unless get prior written permission from Vice-Chancellor and followed any appropriate restriction, limitation or term which is consider needed or necessary to apply by Vice-Chancellor\"*

The girl was charge with the reason of incite other to boycott university permitted campus election during a gathering at UPM Administration Buildingon 29 September 2005. In the other hand, she was charge for joining a memorandum sending march from National Mosque to Malaysia Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) October 7, 2005.

ii) Another UPM student, Ridhuan Bin Othman @ Abd. Razak, was charged with the same reason, case fact and same section with Lim Sok Swan, which is

Section 3 (f) and Section 11. However there is another charge for Ridhuan
under Section 11, because of joining a assembly and sending memorandum of Free and Fair Campus Election in front of Malaysia Parliamentt at 21 September.

iii) A final year Science University of Malaysia student, was charged under Section 12 (1), (2) and (3), Sections Universiti Sains Malaysia (Disciplines Students), 1999, University and University College Act which state:

12 (1)\"no student, organization, body or students group, without prior permission from the vice chancellor, can publish or distribute any documents
in campus or outside the campus\"

12 (2) \"in giving allowance under subsection 12(1), vice chancellor can set any restriction, terms and condition which is considered as needed and appropriate\"*

*12(3) \"permission that required under this section are the addition to any license, permit, or any other form of authorized under any others written laws.\"*

The girl was charged with the reason she distributed flyers with title \"Students Agenda\" without permission from university at hostel on 10 September 2005, 11.30pm.

Actually the \"Students Agenda\" is a flyers of students' demand for the campus election on international, national and campus level issue, the content of flyers included students' point of view on WTO, government corruption, privatization of education, water, electricity and health care, free and fair campus election, university red tape, and freedom of language usage.

Sir,

Launch Free and Fair Campus Reelection Immediate at All Malaysia Local Higher Education Institute and Drop Charge against University Students

Refer to above title, I/ We _____________________ showing our deep concern to Malaysia all 17 local higher education institute campus election system and charging under UUCA over UPM's Lim Sok Swan, UPM Ridhuan Bin Othman @ Abd. Razak and a USM student for involving in Free and Fair Campus Election campaign.

The unfairness and faulty practice by the authorities was heard and I/ we was/ were told that it is a step to ensure the winning of the pro-authority or Aspirasi Team in the campus election, with this we feel disappointment and dissatisfaction on it.

As we know, campus election is a chance for the students to choose their representative regardless which camp/ team (pro-students or pro-authorities) the candidates was belong to, this was also tally with the principle of democracy. However the faulty and unfairness practice from the authority such as sponsoring pro-authorities, e-voting, threatening pro-students candidate and supporter and others malfeasance practice are violating the
students' right to choose their representative freely and fairly.

At the other hand, students who are involve in this Free and Fair Campus Election should be recognized their right of assembly and right of speech and expression. Therefore charge over two university girl who distributed flyers, joint peace assembly and joint the memorandum sending process should be discharge immediately. Beside to respect the fundamental students' right, it is also to show your sincerity of promise on the parliament where you said UUCA should be review.

Therefore I/ we strongly urge the Minister of Ministry of Higher Education,
Y.B. Dato' Dr. Haji Mohd. Shafie bin Salleh to:

  1. Declare the current campus election invalid

  2. Give order to each university to conduct a free and fair campus reelection or else take responsible for the corrupted electoral system

  3. Ensure every misconduct behavior is not repeated and take immediate action on individual/ group/ department who are responsible for it

  4. Ensure campus election in the future will be not violating principle of freedom, fairness and democracy.

  5. Calling Minister of Higher Education to give direct order to respective university to drop charge immediately on all these students. At the same time, take no action on any students who are involved in the Free and Fair Campus Election campaign.

  6. Stop any form of violation and recognize immediately students' right of peaceful assembly and right of speech and expression.

  7. Abolish University and College University Act( AUKU)

I/ We sincerely hope the Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education will take responsibility to ensure and protect the students' rights and freedom to choose their representative, beside provide the student with all theirs pertained right and freedom as Malaysia citizen. At the same time keep respect and practice the principle of democracy in the campuses.*

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Premise 8G (7365) Jalan 18/14, 43300
Sri Serdang, Selangor

iii)         Ridhuan bin Othman @ Abd.

iv)             Ridhuan bin Othman @ Abd.

BUDGET 2006: GAGAL MENJAMIN ASPIRASI RAKYAT BIASA

1. Liputan Kesihatan Untuk Rakyat Biasa
2. Keutamaan Pada Pekebun, Penternak Dan Petani Kecil
3. Keperluan Perumahan Selesa Untuk Lapisan Sederhana Dan Miskin.
4. Polisi-Polisi Konkrit Untuk Mengawal Inflasi, Harga Barangan Asas, Dan Jurang Kaya Miskin Yang Semakin Besar.
5. Jaring Keselamatan (Safety Net) Pada Pekerja-Pekerja Kolar Biru.
6. Pengurusan Wang Rakyat Secara Bijak

Perumahan Selesa Untuk Lapisan Sederhana Dan Miskin

[The Right to Adequate Housing (Article 11(1): 13/12/1991, UN Committee on Economic Social & Cultural Rights]

Polisi Mengawal Inflasi, Harga Barangan Asas, & Jurang Kaya Miskin

       Pengurusan Wang Rakyat Secara Bijak

URGENT APPEAL

Urging Free and Fair Campus Reelection

September 12, 2005 - Students under the name “Malaysia Students Solidarity¡” visited to National Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) to raise the issue of Public Speaking Test in IIUM and cases of students being threatened on few campuses to
vote for the pro-establishment students block.

September 21, 2005 - About 200 university students, held a 90-minute peaceful protest outside the Parliament building demanding for fair play during the upcoming campus elections. The students held placards with caricatures of the Higher Education Minister Dr Shafie Salleh, that were peppered with the words such as, “blur¡” and “don¡‘t
know”, in reference to the minister¡’s recent comments on the campus elections.
They also unfurled a banner that read 'Students demand for clean campus election, free campus', while sporadic chants of “student power¡” was heard a few times.

September 26, 2005 - Nomination day for the annual campus polls turned out to be “boycott day” at five public universities, where the pro-students faction (always labeled as “anti-establishment” faction) refused to put up candidates to show protest against the unfairness and abuse of power that caused by the university administration. Five universities are Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM), Universiti Telnologi Malaysia (UTM) and Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI).

October 7, 2005 - Complete with a black coffin which was draped with the Malaysian flag and had the words “Campus Democracy”, some 150 undergraduates staged a funeral procession in the pouring rain.

It was warning notice from our young people to announce the imperative crisis that happened in our countries, campuses all around Malaysia was full of faulty and unfairness.

BACKGROUND

Campus election which is the necessary process to form Student Representative Council (SRC) held every year in Malaysia local universities. However, complaints of faulty, unfairness and abuse of power heard from every university.

Looking at the history of campus elections, irregularities like midnight raids on students¡¯ rooms, crackdowns on activities organized by students who refuse to be stooges, physical assault of students who will not bow to orders and intimidation in other forms are alleged almost every year.

  2. 6 USM campus election candidates and nominators¡¯ family receive phone call and message (SMS) of threat.

Dear Sir,

Launch Free and Fair Campus Reelection Immediate at All Malaysia Local Higher Education Institute

Refer to above title, I/ We ______________ showing our deep concern to Malaysia all 17 local higher education institute campus election system.

The unfairness and faulty practice by the authorities was heard and I/ we was told that it is a step to ensure the winning of the pro-authority or Aspirasi Team in the campus election, with this we feel disappointment and dissatisfaction on it.

As we know, campus election is a chance for the students to choose their representative regardless which camp/ team (pro-students or pro-authorities) the candidates was belong to, this was also tally with the principle of democracy. However the faulty and unfairness practice from the authority such as sponsoring pro-authorities, e-voting, threatening pro-students candidate and supporter and others malfeasance practice are violating the students¡¯ right to choose their representative freely and fairly.

Therefore I/ we strongly urge the Minister of Ministry of Higher Education, Y.B. Dato¡¯ Dr. Haji Mohd. Shafie bin Salleh to:

  1. Declare the invalid of current campus election

  2. Give order to each university to conduct a free and fair campus reelection or else take responsible for the corrupted electoral system

  3. Ensure every misconduct behavior is not repeated and take immediate action on individual/ group/ department who are responsible for it.

  4. Ensure campus election in the future will be not violating principle of freedom, fairness and democracy.

I/ We sincerely hope the Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education will take responsibility to ensure and protect the students¡¯ rights and freedom to choose their representative. At the same time keep respect and practice the principle of democracy in the campuses.

Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

RESOLUTION ON FREE AND FAIR CAMPUS ELECTION 2005

BY SOLIDARITY FOR MALAYSIAN STUDENTS

(SOLIDARITI MAHASISWA MALAYSIA)

Election is a manifestation of the democratic practice. Although election is only a substance in the democracy system, its implementation gives a significant impact on the democratic practice because our people are given civil rights to choose their ideal leadership independently.

As the general election serves to form the parliament, campus election is also an important process to choose the student representatives in forming the Student Representative Council (SRC) that represents the
voices of all university students in striving for student's rights and welfare. In addition, SRC also provides a platform to voice out students' stance on various social issues and national policies.

Since 2003, there were democratic oppressions occurred in campuses, which brought to the orphanage of campus election. For instance, the short campaign period during the campus election had caused the voters
failed to recognize the qualified candidates; the influence of ruling party in the prosecution of university authority on so-call \"opposition party supporter\" had caused some of the students being suspended their privilege to stay in hostel; the non-transparent of the electronic voting system was applied and the privacy of voter were also interrupted by the implementation of serial number system.

Therefore, the Solidarity for Malaysian Students is of the opinion that:

Free and fair campus election is important because the chosen student representatives were given the responsibility and true power to strive for student's issue and people's agenda independently. Below are our
claims for free and fair campus election:

1.             To allow students to form coalition and publicize manifesto openly so that the voters can choose the candidates base on their agenda and principle.

2.           To prolong campaign period to 5 consecutive working days so that voters can recognize the candidates and their agenda.

3.           To stop immediately threats on voters so that voters can choose their candidates without disturbance and fear.

4.           To abolish electronic voting system and labeling of serial number on the ballot so that the privacy of vote and the transparency of vote counting are protected.

5.           To allow monitoring team from organizations such as SUHAKAM, SUARAM and HAKAM during the campus election.

6.           Deputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and people who are not independent must not be a member of campus election committee to ensure the campus election is free and fair.

SMM highlights the importance of all claims stated above to ensure free and fair campus election. As if all the claims were not met and the same problems reoccur, we want the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs to step down due to his failure in ensuring a free and fair campus election based on democracy principle.

SMM also holds that SRC should be led by representatives of progressive ideas in developing the country and building the nation regardless of race, gender, religion, or cultural background. Following are the basic requirements of the pioneers of student union:

1. To claim that university students have the right and freedom to associate and use all facilities provided without discrimination and prohibition.

2. To claim that study fees should be decreased and loan without interest is offered to university students.

3. To abolish Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) that prohibits the freedom of academic, association and _expression.

4. To claim the government to eradicate corruption wholeheartedly because this phenomenon worsen social poverty.

Finally, we, as Malaysian Students, unite under Solidarity for Malaysian Students (SMM) without distinction of any kind, such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status, would like to claim assurance from:

1.                             Prime Minister should ensure that campus election should be implemented fairly, transparently and freely to revitalize students' rights in campus election.

2.                           Higher Education Ministry should be independent in the sense of not giving any support to any student groups during the election.

(World Festival of Youth and Students) 。

[ 2005/07/05 13:10 | by 安那琪 ]
2005。7。5

THE LISTENER

The new line up leads by the ex-bassist from the band Nao (previously Ban Fan) has earned positive votes from their very first showcase through Soundscape Street Roar 2004. "The Listener" comes from the meaning of 3 chinese words "guan shi ying" which reflects the spirit of observing by listening the sound of the world. The Listener holds the fundemental elements of experimental spirits.

COLOR MY IRIS

Formed early 2002, with line-up consist of Thong Wing Hoong (Thong), Ang Chek Chow (Ang), Yau Way King (King), Ahmad Nazery (Jiboy) and Rohazuddin Hassan (E.D). From the key persons in both of the hot and controversial JBHC bands, both the Kharisma and Kamasutra, they started as a band playing mostly soft and more relaxing indie music. CMI music was influenced by a huge variety of bands, such as The Gloria Record, Mineral, Sunny Day Real Estate, Buddhistson, Elliott, and Cursive. Started playing in small gigs and shows around JB, KL and Singapore during their first year (2002), they finally recorded and released their debut E.P, entitled “ending harmony” in December 2002. The debut E.P. was very successfull, receiving great and positive reviews from local and oversea magazines and websites. And via the DIY network, CMI music reached states around Malaysia and countries in Europe (Germany and UK) and Asia (Singapore, Singapore, Japan). CMI toured and played in lots of shows, gigs and music festival, including the 2003 Baybeats Music Festival, in Esplanade, Singapore, alongside with great bands from all over the globe like The Gloria Records (U.S.A), Buddhistson (Japan), and Fonzie (Portugal).

2004 was a quiet year for CMI where all the line-ups just graduated from UTM and settling down with new jobs and new life. And this year, 2005 CMI are coming back active in the local indie scene and are planning a full length CD release somewhere 2nd half this year.

WHITELIGHT

Music appreciating bastards from different background that are met by chance. Despite the different influences, they share the same interest for certain substance. And there they made Whitelight, the alternative to raggae which had long been a favourite to Fred Flintstones. Whitelight's a blend of emotion stirring music that comes in an explosive package which spells shoegaze post-rock and intrumental rock.
